It was a beautiful day in April as Good Neighbor Healthcare Center held its annual Bicycle Safety Helmet Day for the patients of the clinic. A record number of 94 children attended the event and received helmets.
This year we once again participated in the "Hard Hats for Little Heads" Program. This Texas Medical Association (TMA) program promotes exercise and teaches children and their parents about the importance of wearing a helmet when bicycling, in-line skating, skateboarding and riding scooters. The Texas Association of Family Physicians (TAFP) has joined with TMA in this effort to promote safety and exercise. "Hard Hats for Little Heads" is made possible through a grant from the TMA Foundation, thanks to the generous donations of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Prudential, as well as an anonymous foundation and gifts from physicians and their families. A big thank you to the Texas Medical Association, the Texas Association of Family Physicians, and all the donors for making this possible!!
Michelle Davila, RD, LD, CDE, the clinic’s nutritionist, and volunteer Naomi Galindo (daughter of Good Neighbor employee Maggie Galindo) spoke about the rules of the road, bicycle safety and the importance of wearing a helmet.
We would also like to thank all of our wonderful, hard-working volunteers, including Christian Rios and Orlando Benitez from Yes Preparatory High School; David Dinh and Uma Sridharan from General Electric; Eloise Rios; and Naomi Galindo.
We also warmly extend our thanks to Dr. Eva Ayala, a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, who helped us to receive the helmets at no cost to the clinic.
And lastly, thanks to Texas Children’s Hospital for the the donation of water bottles for the event, made by Texas Children’s Hospital.
